Week 7: Web Interface Design

Image
This last week gave me quite a bit of trouble.  I think I may have just been overthinking it all, because now that I have completed it, I wonder how I got so stuck.  I kept reviewing last weeks reading assignments looking for the answers, but kept coming up empty.  I knew from my previous programming classes that there was a way to assign the variables accordingly, but it has been awhile since I took any of those classes, and they never really felt complete enough for it all to stick.  Anyhow after finally resorting to YouTube and reviewing some videos briefly I was able to figure it all out!  It really frustrates me that I didn't think of it sooner, because I knew it had to be something simple but just couldn't figure it out all weekend. It really makes me look forward to my future JavaScript class even more, because although the text tells us how to use JQuery and whatnot instead of writing the code itself, I prefer to know the code itself especially in situa...

Week 6 Web Interface Design

I was pretty pleased with the way my form turned out for last week.  For my lab I did a somewhat bland color scheme, black and white, but I like the way it looks.  Plus it is an order form, so I don't think it schould look too colorful.  Every week I feel like I come so much closer towards what I really want to do with my career, which is web development.  It pleases me to see and feel accomplished in my progress because it didn't really feel like I should be close to graduation because I hadn't taken any classes such as this yet. Now I really see the end is near! While completing last weeks assignment, it took a lot of restraint not to get super into it and figure out how to add certain constraints, such as the validation for a Visa, MasterCard, AMEX, etc. If it weren't for the amount of work I had for other assignments and my other class I probably would have.  This is what I have been looking forward to all this time, was writing and creating websites! ...

Week 5 Web Interface Design

I have loved learning all of the ins and outs that we have been exploring with HTML and CSS thus far.  Although last week proved to be more difficult.  I spent many hours just working on the same aspect regarding the code for the lab assignment.  I researched many different codes to make my slideshow, and even had a couple that worked very well for me, only I couldn't figure out how to implement the text into the image. So I decided to go with the one that the professor provided into the lab assignment.  This one still caused me many problems in which I spent many hours trying to correct. My eyes were blurring and hurting by the time I decided to give up and turn it in as is.  The code  I chose needed to be adjusted when adding the 5 more slides than what was originally programmed into it. This part of the code I just couldn't figure out how to increment correctly to get the desired result.  So the beginning of my slideshow worked flawlessly for the fi...

Week 4: Web Interface Design

You will find screenshots of some of my progress so far, down below from last week with my course project as well as our lab assignment progress through last week.  After finishing the readings for this week, I can see that we are going to be moving right along.  Code looks like it is going to start getting a bit more complicated/detailed.  I am sure once I get into the assignment it will be just fine though. I have enjoyed the work and the progress I have made in this class.  It is very interesting and fun to learn how to design the web pages as we have so far.  Last week took a major turn in learning CSS and implement CSS stylesheets to design and modify the web pages appearance.  I did a lot of playing with the code and refreshing it in the web page to see how it effected the appearance.  That is one thing I am excited about learning this week with the formulas provided in the reading that allows us to change formatting attributes such as font f...

Week 3 Web Interface Design

So far I am really enjoying this class and the hands on learning I am receiving from actively working with HTML and CSS coding to write and format web pages!  As I have stated in previous weeks, I am a learn by doing type of person, so getting out there and implementing this myself is what helps me really understand and retain what we are learning. The first week was more of a refresher on previous HTML basics that I had learned in the past.  The second week was all new information for me.  Learning about CSS is very intriguing because it makes it all feel real.  HTML by itself just displays the text in web page and doesn't look very appealing.  Whereas, after learning how to implement CSS, a web page begins to look and feel like a real web page that one visits on a daily basis.  Formatting the appearance of a web page using CSS is vital in any professional web page because that is the viewers first impression.  If you don't have a web page that is v...

Week 2 Web Interface Design

Only the second week in and I am already getting quite a bit of enjoyment out of this class.  Last week was fun in creating my own online resume for our lab.  Now I am looking forward to learning how to make our web pages more visually appealing using CSS (cascading style sheets). After reading the chapter for this week, it is a lot of information to take in.  I am more of a learn by doing type of person, so I am ready to dive in and get some practice in formatting and wording it appropriately to line up with what we want to accomplish in our web pages.  I am going to get started on the lab tonight, but I am going to include some screenshots from my lab from last week to show the pages that I created for our lab which was an online resume profile.  I am planning on updating that and expanding on it as I learn more through this class to use as a resume/portfolio piece as I work towards pursuing my career past DeVry.  I always advise other students to take a...

Week 1 Introduction

Hello class, My name is Jamie Maehl and I am working towards my Bachelors Degree in Computer Information Systems at DeVry. My focus is on Web Development, so I am sure I will find this course in particular to serve me very well. I have some experience with HTML, so I am excited to see how I can expand on that knowledge throughout this course. Outside of school, I work full time as a server/bartender. I am also a single mom to a very energetic, loving, strong-willed, 6 years old boy! He is my whole world, and he keeps me on my toes! We love to have lots of fun together so we spend much of our time swimming, biking, camping, and really anything else outdoors we can think of. I lead a busy life, but it is very rewarding and there is never a dull moment. As far as this course and the assignments for this week, I haven't quite started them.  While I am finishing up on the videos and reading assignments, I am hoping to get really into the hands on assignments tomorrow.  I will...
